This week I was nominated for the Reading Habits Tag, twice. Thank you so much Chicnerdreads and MyComicRelief, both are great supporters of my blog, the community we share; and both post awesome content, so check them out. Based on my weekly blogging schedule I reserve these tags for Sundays, and today is an exciting one as I can talk about my favorite pass time, doing an insane amount of reading.
1. Do you have a certain place at home for reading?
I do most my reading in bed or on the couch. One day my ‘man cave’ will be more of a reading library with perfect reading chairs for Jenn and I. But for now I have no designated place. I also like to read on the patio, but living in Alberta there are only a few short months that the weather permits that.
2. Bookmarks or random pieces of paper?
I love bookmarks. I will grab the free ones at the library, or bookstore, constantly buying new ones that appeal to me. I have a nice little collection going and I like to find a bookmark that fits the theme of the book I am reading. Despite the over abundant amount of bookmarks, I still like to use old concert tickets once and a while.
3. Can you stop reading anywhere or do you stop at chapter breaks or certain places?
The only rule I follow for myself is stopping at the top of the left page. I don’t like trying to find my place on a page, so I built the habit so I could always jump in with no confusion or rereading. Chapter breaks have little to no effect on me, generally I will want to read the first couple pages of a chapter before I put the book down.
4. Do you eat or drink while reading?
5. Multitasking: Music or TV while reading?
If it is up to me I prefer the silence, and minimal distractions. Once I could perfect the art of reading and consistently keeping an eye on my children playing, I mastered all distractions. If Jenn is watching a show I will usually sit with her and read. But, no, I wouldn’t put music on for myself or anything.
6. One book at a time or several?
As far as fiction goes, its one book at a go. At the same time I will have a nonfiction, usually about writing, on the go. And then you gotta fit comics in there, I like to save graphic novels for between novels but some I cannot wait for.
7. Reading at home or everywhere?
Everywhere, I take my book with me whenever I leave the house. Especially those books that you never want to put down, I will cram a page or two in whenever I get the chance. I really enjoy reading at the park or the library, often I prefer it to reading in the house.
8. Reading out loud or silently in your head?
Do people actually read out loud to themselves? This is actually one of the easiest ways to drive my partner crazy.
9. Do you read ahead or skip pages?
There is only one example I can think of, where one chapter was frustrating me so much that I just put it to rest and skipped the last few pages. Otherwise, no spoilers, and I would hate to miss anything.
10. Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?
I generally do my best to keep everything in the best condition. This probably stems from collecting comic books at an early age. I like to give my books a good stretch before I start reading them, to help the spine get through. With the kids and life I am trying not to worry so much, books will take some inevitable damage. So, unless I want to start wrapping them up, hiding them from the light and moisture, I need to let books be books.
11. Do you write in your books?
I put one mark in the same place of every book. One day I may come across a book that I lost at some point, or my children may know it as something of their father one day. Other than that no notes, quotes, highlights or underlining.
So, who do you tag?
