Readers Confession Tag

The Book Mermaid hit me up on another tag, trying to get me to divulge my secrets as a reader.  Thanks Marta, I appreciate the tag, and I am looking forward to how well you handle that zombie herd I sent your way.  Well, lets get into it…

Have you ever damaged a book?

I don’t know the meaning of the word… Just kidding, but, with two small children I have to take extra precautions.  I used to have a bad habit of falling asleep on top of my books and maybe the odd water damage.  In actuality, Jenn has damaged more of my books than the kids or I have.  Sorry to throw you under the bus, hun.

Have you ever damaged a borrowed book?

Never.  I used to borrow my buddies comics by the box load, and read series and runs at a time.  One time there was this big Batman mini series that I was right into.  The last issue he had in the run was an autographed, certified copy, so tempted I was to crack it open as safely as possible, but opted not.  When I returned the box I let him know how difficult that was for me.  Then he tells me, not only did he open it but that he had accidently ripped a page inside.  I still have no idea how that storyline ends.

How long does it take you to read a book?

That’s a difficult query.  Books come in a wide range of length and style.  Then there is the personal investment, some books read quick, some books you need to get in your head as fast as you can, and some books just take forever to read.  This is an impossible question to answer.

Books you haven’t finished?

When I was a kid I could never finish a book, there was so many things I wanted to read that I would get distracted and start something else.  Now, I tend to be pretty dedicated to a book once I have started.  I go by the rule that if I am not enjoying a book that I will push to the 100 page mark.  By the time I read to 100, I am probably 1/3 through the novel already and finish it off, or I am right into it by then.

Hyped / Popular books you didn’t like?

Well, if you didn’t read my opinion on The Song of Ice and Fire series, you can check this post out.  Another one that shuns me as a book blogger, I just can’t get into Harry Potter.  For whatever reason, it is not for me, sorry booknerds.

Is there a book you wouldn’t tell anyone you’re reading?

Not that I would actually read… or I just wont say.

How many books do you own?

I have no idea?  Novels, probably approaching a couple hundred.  Graphic Novels, I would say around the same mark.  Comic books, thousands, but I will be turning them to liquid soon.

Are you a fast or slow reader?

For sure I am around the average reading level of 250 words per minute.  Again, this is dependent upon interest and distractions.  Seeing how many books some bloggers and vloggers go through makes me feel like a slow reader, you know what I mean.

Do you like to buddy read?

I love some buddy reading with my such good friend, Ericzor.  Our book discussions can get pretty epic when discussing our favorites.  Discussing books with new people can get awkward, so it needs to be someone I share a good rapport with.

Do you read better in your head or out loud?

In my head.  The Book Mermaid answered with out loud and that is so foreign to me.  I couldn’t imagine reading a whole book out loud to nobody.

If you were only allowed to own one book, what would it be and why?

Yikes, one book?  Not a series, not a trilogy, but one book.  I want to say so many.  The only one I can think of that would never get boring, no matter how many times I read it, would be Alice in Wonderland.

  1. I’ve never been able to get into Harry Potter either! It took me about three years of constant restarting to read The Philosopher’s Stone all the way through and then I finally gave up halfway through The Chamber of Secrets. It’s a shame because I’d like to be wrapped up in the magic of the world but it just never captured me.

I am so glad I am not alone. It is the favorite of so many other book bloggers.

I have the same 100-page rule for books. If by then I’m bored, I don’t go further, but I believe all books deserve a real chance to convince me.
I only reread books out loud and just to work on my accent. I find it too weird to read a book to myself!

Thanks for answering! 🙂 And yes, I really need to read everything out loud! It’s an old habit, actually. But my mom always thinks I’m talking alone 😂 (okay, okay, I know I have yet to post the zombie tag, I’ll do it tomorrow, I promise!! 😂😂)
