Sure, I am going to talk about Jeff Lemire some more. It has been said by myself and many others that reading Mr. Lemire’s work is a privilege and that is no lip service. In my short term as a blogger I have reviewed plenty of his pieces, including the first volume of Descender, he undoubtedly topped my list of comic book authors and also created one of my favorite books ever. Added to Dustin Nguyen’s masterful, award winning artwork, Descender is a prize.
Published back in May, 2016, from Image Comics, the second volume of Descender collects issues #7-11. Following Tim-21 and company as they navigate a universe where all androids are outlawed, and hunted. A character from the young robots past enters the picture, nothing like you expect, he faces his own demons as he joins the search for the elusive android. And a terrorist group effects major changes in the universe, with bigger plans under way and a surprising connection to our protagonist. The galaxy just got a whole lot bigger, with an inevitable war on the forefront. The most valuable android in the systems faces his own difficult decisions, and a shock ending may have answered for him.
Progressing the story along from the first volume, the story, characters, and universe expand dramatically. Enthralling the reader with emotional, suspenseful action that doesn’t take a breath. This is a much bigger story than Jeff Lemire has attempted before and the results are absolutely rewarding. Every character and element having such depth and history, giving you a feel that there is a lot more going on than we realize. This is just the tip of the iceberg of one of the most unique science fiction stories available.
The artwork is mind bogglingly stunning. Dustin Nguyen achieves page after page of brilliant water colours that capture the eye and imagination. Every character, android, or alien creatively developed that any one of them would be the highlight in many other books. Every page turn, every panel, is so impressive and talented that I could just stare at the artwork all day, with no storyline, and a million little details would pop right out.
The combination of Mr. Lemire and Mr. Nguyen is a dream come true. There is magic and emotion to the worlds and characters these two have built, collaboratively. This is my favorite ongoing comic series right now, I never want to stop reading Descender. 5/5, if you have not picked this series up yet than you are wasting precious time and money in the wrong place. I started this post with gushing over Jeff Lemire’s greatness, and I will end by telling you, this is on track to being his best work yet.
Thanks booknerds, I’ll just be over here dying tell the next volume comes out.
