Last week my strong, wise, beautiful, partner Jenn received an invitation to work on her Masters in Nursing. This is huge news for her, our family, and our future, I am so proud of her. In celebration of the big news and her heading back to school, today will be a special top ten. We are talking about fictional schools and all the wonderful places we would love to study. Jenn even assisted me in compiling todays list with some of her favourites. Without further delay…
10. Bayside High
We talked about many classic high schools from Sweet Valley, Riverdale, or even Breaker High, all very cool places. We agreed many of these schools would have too much drama, so we picked our one favourite. We chose a place where the biggest drama was finding a roach in the bathroom, or your friend taking too many caffeine pills, Bayside High from Saved by the Bell. You have the brightly coloured hallways, the humorous faculty, and of course The Max, the coolest diner hangout for any teenager. At Bayside even a geek like Screech is accepted into the ‘popular’ group.
9. Unseen University
The fictional University of Discworld offers some of the greatest on-site facilities in all of fiction. What put the Unseen University on this list is the library which offers every book ever fathomed, from past, future, or even from alternate realities. I don’t think I would ever leave.
8. Walkerville Elementary
Where the heck is Walkerville Elementary, you ask? Walkerville is where Ms. Felicity Frizzle teaches her students with amazing daily fieldtrips on the Magic School Bus. Honestly, who didn’t want to be in Ms. Frizzle’s class? Going to space, inside a human body, a frictionless planet; flying, shrinking, drama, excitement, the Magic School Bus had it all.
7. Battle School
The orbital space station school from Ender’s Game has a tough, militaristic curriculum, but darn, it would be rad. The simulation games are one thing, the ultimate attraction is the zero gravity battle rooms. Playing ‘the game’ with your battle army would be one of the greatest extra curricular sports in all of fiction.
6. Jedi Academy
Recently I reviewed the mid-grade book Jedi Academy by Jeffrey Brown. Even as a grown man I wished I could attend Jedi Academy. Learning how to use the force, build a lightsabre, becoming a full blown Jedi Knight! Plus, any school where Yoda is the head master is a win in my books.
5. South Harmon Institute of Technology
The 2006 film Accepted was about a bunch of misfit kids creating a school in which they could do whatever they wanted. South Harmon Institute of Technology, or S.H.I.T., had a curriculum of personal study on whatever you wanted to learn about. Culinary studies, rocking out, skate boarding, partying, meditation, literally any thing you felt like. How does that prepare you for a career? Who cares, it is the ultimate party college.
4. OASIS School
The interactive, online school of Ready Player One works like a regular high school, but you are inside the OASIS. The greatest place to be in fiction, because it collects all of the greatest elements from everything else. What makes the OASIS school pretty special is even an orphaned, homeless child like Wade was able to complete his schooling, and you get a free OASIS console out of the deal.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, don’t come for my head yet, we’re not done the list, calm down. Hogwarts, I agree is a pretty special place where you can learn magic and play the sweet game of Quidditch. I am not a fan of the exclusivity of Hogwarts. It seems you cannot earn your way here through hard work and good grades, or even because you are special. You need to be a part of a bloodline and they like you even more if your parents are alumni and investors. I don’t need your pretentious school, there are many other schools to learn my magic at, thank you.
2. The University
Ah, the magic school of The Kingkiller Chronicles. Now this is a school that no matter your background you can earn your way in through hard work and studying. Not only will they teach you how to use magic but you can build magical artifacts, learn ancient secrets, and then there is the Archives, the second coolest library on this list. Basically, the University is like Hogwarts but better.
1. Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters
Do you shoot lasers out of your face? Do you have claws growing out of your hands? Are you an ugly blue monster? Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters offers you the chance to harness those abilities, plus a grade ‘A’ education. If you work hard at Xavier’s you will even have the opportunity to train in the Danger Room, a step in you becoming a full blown super hero! Best school ever, super hero school!
Thanks booknerds, let the controversy begin!
