Go Ninja! Go Ninja! Go Ninja! Go!
It’s time for some ninjas in a half-shell. It’s time for some turtle power. In fact, I am so pumped up for some mutant turtles let’s kick things off with the classic 80’s theme song. Press it. Listen to it. It’ll get you in the mood.
Ah, I love me some Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I’ve enjoyed many of the original comics. However, this is a completely different kind of Turtle comic. Archie Comics produced this much more kid-friendly version in 1989 during the run of the unforgettable cartoon. The official title of the series is Eastman and Laird’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures but, that is an even larger mouthful than an average TMNT title.
This issue includes the first comic adaptation of Mondo Gecko. One of the many characters invented for the toy line. Mondo’s first appearance was as an action figure before he appeared in the ’87 cartoon. Mondo Gecko is traditionally a Gecko turned mutant for the forces of evil but, has had many different origin stories, including todays featured comic. Mondo went on to be an original member the Mighty Mutanimals, a short lived spin-off team of Turtle pals.
Anyways, let’s get into the book. You may want to play that theme one more time. I know I am.
As you can see, the art is a 180 from Eastman and Laird’s original comic run. This is a much cheaper style, with limited colours and what can barely be referred to as a backdrop. Appeal is high for the appearance of Mondo Gecko, I mean he has a backwards hat! What is most humorous about this cover is the sneaky use of the Pizza Hut symbol. At this time the turtles were majorly sponsored by Pizza Hut, including this book. So, I have to wonder if the corporation made sure this was added-
I would absolutely open the doors of doom to play a game titled Dr. Chaos. That’s the best name for anything ever. If I ever have another child… Wait, why do they ask if I dare to open the doors to doom twice? In two different fonts? This is serious.

The Turtles and April O’Neil are returning from New Orleans after teaming up with Man Ray. Raphael is distinguished by having no head band and a jacket. This has to do with limited colour printing. Basically the comic producers are cheap.
April is documenting their journeys in her journal and is constantly wondering what is on the Turtles minds. Apparently, due to cheapness again, there are two Michelangelo’s and one of which is dreaming that Leonardo meets a dinosaur?
They arrive home in New York, but before they can make it back to base and see Splinter they hear music coming from Shredder’s old headquarters.
Ready for action, the Turtles are surprised when the base is empty, except for a band, Merciless Slaughter, practising in the empty space.
The Ninja Teens watch the band play until the lights are suddenly turned out-
This band practice spot is too good to be true as they are interrupted by the most badass Foot Clan soldiers wearing diapers that I have ever seen.
Luckily, Merciless Slaughter has gained some fans-
Much to their surprise-
In an effort to escape, lead singer Mondo leads his girlfriend to another room. Unfortunately, this is where big boss man foot soldier is at. And, it only says *skull and crossbones*.
Big boss robot foot clan monster throws Mondo into a bunch of barrels-
I hope that they are just normal barrels left in an abandoned super villain headquarters-
Boss man Foot guy makes a break for it-
But, oh no, what is happening to Mondo?
Good thing that Mondo is already an awesome skateboarder as he joins Mikey in the chase for Boss man Foot Clan man to save Mondo’s girlfriend.
A perfect opportunity for some catch up, and origins-
Boss man climbs a building cause that’s what bad guys do. Luckily, geckos are pretty good climbers-
Mondo Gecko uses his sweet skateboarding powers to defeat Boss man. Wait, he didn’t carry his skateboard up that building just for that, did he?
Even after Mondo risked his life for her, his girlfriend is like “nah, you’re ugly now.”
But, we do get Mondo’s full title. They totally stole the ‘esquire’ thing from Bill and Ted.
Donny spots some crazy meteor things, but the groups like “nah, let’s not deal with that” and they go home.
And, have pizza. The end.
Instead of your traditional fan mail, this book features some amazing amateur art. Check it out!
Ooh, and there is this teaser for the Mighty Mutanimals which is pretty good considering they don’t drop for a couple years. However, with this books intro to Mondo, and the last adventure with Man Ray, this is what it all leads up to.
See… Pizza Hut.
Thanks booknerds, have one more listen to that theme song before you go. Turtle power!
