2017 Green Onion Awards

Welcome to the second annual Green Onion Awards! Also known as The Onions! Recipients of these awards neither care nor know that they won but, that won’t stop me. The Onions are prestigious in my mind. The votes (my vote) are in for the best of 2017, and it is time to announce the year’s winners!

Let’s do-

2017 New Release Children’s Book

The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors by Drew Daywalt and Adam Rex

Author Drew Daywalt showed us he could write about more than crayons this year by writing about rocks and stationary. Teamed up with prestigious illustrator, Adam Rex, this book was set for success. The duo nailed it with this silly story about the long-beloved game.

2017 Children’s Movie

That was close. The debate was between The Lego Batman Movie and Beauty and the Beast all year long. We were given a lot of flops between Captain Underpants and The Emoji Movie. But, at the end of the year, Pixar released Coco. A fun, emotional thrill ride, this is a movie that can stand beside Pixar classics like Toy Story and Finding Nemo.

2017 Animated Series

Rick and Morty

Pickle Rick. That is all I have to say about that.

2017 TV Series

Stranger Things 2

I spent most of the year jonesing for this show. Thankfully, when it finally arrived, it did not disappoint. I appreciate how they upped the game, adding characters and stakes but, managed to create a well-rounded story. Plus, I love the retro feel still.

2017 Film Adaptation

Thor: Ragnorak

What a year for superhero films! Logan, GOTG2, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, it was crazy! But, Thor: Ragnorak takes the take for being a thrill ride like none other. Honestly, I would have never guessed at the beginning of the year that Thor would trample these other great titles yet, here we are.

2017 Movie

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

I do not give a care what 1 in 2000 fanboys have to say; Last Jedi was one for the ages. It was fulfilling to see Luke Skywalker go full circle and ended with such a bang. I also love me some Poe, and I was happy to see him take a pivotal role. Forget the negative voices, Last Jedi is impressive.

2017 Graphic Novel

Everyone’s a Aliebn When Ur a Aliebn Too by Jomny Sun

This may surprise you as much as it surprises me, that I did not pick a Jeff Lemire book. But, in recent weeks I received this cute little book, and I love it. It has a creative concept and valuable lessons. I would say more but- review coming in the next couple weeks.

2017 Ongoing Comic Series

Descender by Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen

There we go, good old Jeff Lemire. Descender has been one of my favourite anything for a couple of years now. The art is mind-blowing, and the sci-fi drama is one of the best. I will be honest, Black Hammer is coming up fast as my favourite, and I did have to debate- just for a second.

2017 YA Novel

Warcross by Marie Lu

Warcross was promised to be another Ready Player One… it’s not. But, that does not mean it wasn’t good. I enjoyed this unique little story; I just wanted more action.

2017 Book of the Year

Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson

Technically I am not done this book. I mean it is the size of four novels. But, god damn, it is so good. I love being back in the Cosmere and Sanderson always knocks them out of the park. I cannot wait to see how it ends as it battles for one of my all-time favourite books.

2018 Most Anticipated Movie

Avengers: Infinity War

I may be pumped for Ready Player One but, the culmination of the MCU is something I cannot help but be excited about. I mean, every time I watch that preview I get chills down my spine. This is going to be a significant event, and I will be counting down the days.

2018 Most Anticipated Comic Book

The Terrifics

“Well,” DC thought, “if Marvel is not going to publish Fantastic Four books, we’ll do it!” And, a big thank you DC, one of the best moves you have ever made. Then, signing none other than Jeff Lemire to scribe the issues, an instant win. Oh, and let’s put Plastic Man in it. I cannot handle the awesomeness of it all. I cannot wait for #1.

2018 Most Anticipated Book

Only Human by Sylvain Nuevel

The conclusion of the Themis Files trilogy is something I have been waiting for since I picked up that first strange book a couple of years ago. Nuevel has created quite the story and seeing as how the last book finished, who knows what is in store for the finale.
