Movie Review: Teen Titans Go! to the Movies

I know there are a lot of fans of the original Teen Titans cartoon that believe Teen Titans Go! is too childish of content. Well, it is. It’s childish, ridiculous stuff. I love it. My kids and I have been eating this show up for years. It is easily our favourite children’s program and it is full of laughs for dad.

The new Teen Titans Go! movie has been one of our most anticipated movies of the year and the countdown has been going for a while. There was no way that these guys would have let me get through this weekend in peace without seeing Teen Titans Go! to the Movies.

This story is driven by Robin’s need to be accepted as a true superhero, and not just a sidekick. He believes that the only way to gain this notoriety is if he has his own superhero movie. But, to gain a movie, he and the Titans are going to need an arch-nemesis. Enter Slade, the most badass of possible enemies. Though, the problem is, Slade may have more power and pull than the Titans realize and Robin is going to have to decide between his friends or his big blockbuster movie.

This film is packed to the brim with references. Right off the top, there were more comic book references than you can hope for. Even for a super comic-nerd like me, it is going to take plenty of watches to catch them all. And, oh my, the cameos. Like, every hero of DC shows up. For lots of them, this is going to be there first and only big screen appearance. There was even an appearance from the king of cameos himself. You know who I am talking about, and yes he crossed universes.

Besides that, there are so many great jokes. Especially if you are a fan of the show, there is plenty of jokes that carry through. But, do not worry, you don’t have to be a Titans fan to enjoy this ride. It is more like the ultimate superhero movie satire with jokes for everyone young and old. I was laughing harder than the kids all the way through. And, I think that may be due to my extensive comic knowledge, so any comic book lover needs to catch this cartoon.

Of course, one of the ridiculous parts about the Teen Titans Go! series is the many outrageous songs. Transferring musical numbers to the big screen is a challenge for anything without a Disney princess. The Titans movie nailed it with a couple catchy and hilarious numbers. I knew they would, some of their songs are regulars at my house. We often jam out to “Night Begins to Shine,” and now we got a couple great new tunes.

This was a step up from your average movie adaptation of an ongoing TV show. Instead of feeling like an extended episode, it was truly worth going out to the movies for. The Teen Titans managed to take us to big new exciting places while offering the same humour that we love them for. The important thing is we had fun, the kids loved it, and I loved it. I think it would be difficult for anyone to say they didn’t enjoy this movie, its just pure fun.
